Starting from Scratch as an Adult: It’s Never Too Late to Learn Guitar

Hi, I’m Bill Dickman, a guitar instructor based in Madison, WI, and today I want to talk to all of you who may be thinking, “Is it too late to start learning guitar as an adult?” The answer is simple: Absolutely not!

Learning guitar as an adult can be one of the most rewarding experiences, no matter your age or musical background. Whether you’re in your 30s, 50s, or even retired, starting from scratch is not only possible—it can be incredibly fun and fulfilling.

Why Now is the Perfect Time

As a adult, you have something many younger students don’t—focus and patience. You know what you like, and you’re better equipped to dedicate time to something you’re passionate about. Plus, playing guitar can help reduce stress, keep your brain sharp, and even improve hand-eye coordination.

What to Expect

Starting out, we’ll cover the basics: simple chords, strumming patterns, and getting comfortable with your instrument. Whether you want to play your favorite songs, learn fingerstyle, or dive into music theory, the journey is tailored to your goals. You don’t need to know how to read music to get started. We’ll use guitar tablature (tabs) or chord charts to get you playing quickly.

Keep It Fun

The key to success is to enjoy the process. As a teacher, my approach is to keep lessons relaxed and enjoyable while still helping you make steady progress. We’ll focus on the music you love, keeping you motivated and engaged.

Remember, it’s never too late to pick up the guitar and start your musical journey. I’ve taught adults of all ages, and I’ve seen firsthand how fulfilling it can be to achieve your musical goals. So, if you’ve always wanted to learn, now is the perfect time to take the leap!
